The location was selected by American pioneer John Loudoun because of its proximity to the Shenandoah River and its availability of supplies, to produce a market for the abundant forest resources. In 1776, Loudoun married Susanna Tappen, the daughter of a wealthy Dutch trader. They settled at what is now Dumbarton. John Loudoun went to study medicine in England but decided to return to his homeland and practice his profession there.
