Dumbarton, Virginia is a place with a great history and interesting facts about the town. The location was selected by American pioneer John Loudoun because of its proximity to the Shenandoah River and its availability of supplies, to produce a market for the abundant forest resources. In 1776, Loudoun married Susanna Tappen, the daughter of a wealthy Dutch trader. They settled at what is now Dumbarton. John Loudoun went to study medicine in England but decided to return to his homeland and practice his profession there.
